Towards UMTS
Posted in

Since I have the new XDA Trion am willing to investigate into UMTS. The first the UMTS coverage - as one can see, the right top corner appears in light blue and seems to be not covered.

There was some trouble in activating the UMTS with O2. Actually they send a new SIM card with the phone. Until this card is activated, you can't change the options (including UMTS). Activating the new card would lead to the deactivation of my multi cars. After asking the support (that's the advantage being a "Pay Monthly" customer) it took only a few minutes to cancel the new card's activation. Just adding the UMTS option within the portal is the secret.

Finally it is not as easy as I thought: adding the UMTS option includes a pair of new UMTS enabled SIM cards. Even if your old ones support already UMTS. Now I have to wait until the new cars are activated.

ScummVM
Posted in

Yeah, I'll  get all of my Lucasarts games out of the desk to re-play them on the plane. Since I got my hands on a WM5 device ScummVM [1] makes it also possible for me.

"ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!"

The latest version 0.9.0a [2] fixes some issues in the previous version. And of course there is a Windows Mobile 5 ARM package for Windows Mobile 5.

Actually all of my favorite SCUMM games are supported:

Maniac Mansion
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Loom
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Day of the Tentacle
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Full Throttle
The Dig
The Curse of Monkey Island

Actually I just started searching in my archives. Somewhere I still have all the original 3,5" discs with these games copied on a CD. Yet I found only The Dig, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle.

Two tools for capturing screens on a Windows Mobile 5 device: Capture Screen Utility [1] and MagicSS [2]. Both tools are freeware and work quite well.

  • Capture Screen Utility just allows to set a time when the screen should be captured. You can choose the time and the place (main memory or memory card) where to save the image. During installation just choose 'Mobile 5'.

  • MagisSS was written for Pocket PC 2003. I dl'ed [3], copied the file to my device and installed it by clicking the .cab file. After installing the tool it can be assigned to any hardware button. Makes the tool quite accessible. After pressing the capture button the saved image can be saved on main memory or memory card. In addition the folder can be specified. The file can be only saved as .bmp file but each file can be immediately named. Runs without any problem on the xda Trion with Windows Mobile 5.

Windows Vista beta2 does not want to upgrade to RC1 on my Toshiba m400 since there is no IDE controller driver available yet. Looks like I have to wait for another build or maybe the drivers will be available before.

<a hint of sarcasm>Thank you for the German language reforms...</a hint of sarcasm> Again there is another hotfix for the German post-reform rules [1].

Grammatica

A parser for LL(k) grammars, supporting also C# output is Grammatica [1]. I just tried it and I am highly pleased. Unfortunately the tool is under LGPL [2]. Unfortunately the created classes require the Grammatica runtime.

Finally I got my hands on a xda Trion aka HTC Hermes after the German mail lost my first one. It took almost four weeks to recover the delivery.

Finally I found some minutes to update the design of my welbog. The design is now the same as the webpage and the weblog is integrated into the site. However there is some finetuning left, I have to do during the next few days. Basically I did manage to replace the dasBlog theme CSS by the one I use for the homepage. since the layout is similar, I just had to modify some of the CSS classes in the dasBlog templates.

After getting a licence and re-installing the MAPILap NNTP [1] Outlook plug-in I was kind of frustrated that the plug-in did not work anymore. Basically I found the reason in the registry settings of the tool. There the account was still disabled since I have chosen this option during a test installation before [2].

Just delete the folder with the deactivated profile name. After the next start of Outlook the plug-in wizard appears again.
